Xavier Tennis Star Angela Charles-Alfred earns October Athlete of the Month Honor

NEW ORLEANS – Angela Charles-Alfred, national champion tennis player for Xavier University of Louisiana, has been selected as the Greater New Orleans Amateur Athlete of the Month for October. Monthly award-winners are chosen in voting by the Greater New Orleans Sports Awards Committee, sponsored by the Allstate Sugar Bowl.
A junior from Saint-Pierre, Martinique, Charles-Alfred posted a perfect 7-0 in doubles play in October. She won the NAIA and overall small-college titles at the ITA Cup championships to become the first-ever overall small-college champion for XULA tennis. Charles-Alfred and freshman Lailaa Bashir defeated the defending NAIA doubles champion from San Diego Christian during the NAIA semifinals. Charles-Alfred and Bashir have won four doubles championships in as many attempts this fall: HBCU National Championships, ITA NAIA South Region, ITA Cup NAIA and the ITA Cup small college. Overall Charles-Alfred and Bashir are 13-2 as a doubles team, and Charles-Alfred is 15-2 in doubles this fall.
Charles-Alfred was selected over four standout high school football players who were also nominated for the honor.
In four October game, Slidell High School’s Harlan Dixon rushed 92 times for 568 yards and six touchdowns and caught 25 passes for 339 yards and one touchdown as the Tigers went 3-1.
Darryle Evans from Hahnville High School ran for 617 yards with 12 total touchdowns in a 4-0 month for the Tigers. In a 42-30 district win over Central Lafourche on Oct. 18, he had 245 yards and four touchdowns, including runs of 30, 32 and 38 yards in the second half.
Mandeville High’s Will Sheppard had 28 receptions for 650 yards and eight touchdowns in October for the Skippers. He leads the Metro area with 53 catches for 1,197 yards and 20 touchdowns this season.
Senior quarterback Shamar Smith led St. James to a No. 1 ranking in the state in Class 3A in October with four victories for the Wildcats. He completed 26-of-58 passes 480 yards and 5 touchdowns and rushed 64 times for 315 yards and 9 touchdowns.
The Greater New Orleans Sports Awards Committee has been selecting an Amateur Athlete of the Month each month since 1957. The athlete must be a native of the greater New Orleans area or must compete for a team in the metropolitan region in order to be eligible. The 2019-20 monthly award winners to be honored next summer at the Greater New Orleans Sports Hall of Fame Induction and Awards Ceremony, hosted by the Allstate Sugar Bowl.
