GATORS HIGH TALL

St. Amant took home first place in the annual Big Horse Open at Zachary High School with host Zachary second. East Ascension was third, Live Oak finished fourth and Holy Cross was fifth. Covington was sixth with St. Paul seventh, Jesuit eighth and Chalmette came in tenth.

The top teams, inlcluding Holy Cross, St. Paul and Jesuit, did not enter very many starters, opting to go with reserves to gain experience.

Eighth-grader Nick Cusimano of Holy Cross won at 106 pounds while Logan Lacoste won at 138 pounds.

Luke Eccles of Jesuit won the title at 132 pounds, David Cuccia of Fontainebleau took first at 113 pounds while Avery Verret of Covington took first at 160 pounds. Jaden Ben of Chalmette came in first at 285 pounds.

St. Amant had winners in Corey Brownwell (120) and Hunter Hawkins (170).

CRUSADERS STARS SHINE IN JERSEY

Brother Martin concluded its weekend at the Kingsway Duals in New Jersey by going 3-2.

After winning both of its matches on Friday, the Crusaders went 1-2 on Saturday, defeating Sun Valley (PA) 68-12 and falling to St. Joe’s (NJ) 43-22 and to Pope John Paul (NJ) 37-30.

A team of Brother Martin reserves won the Billy Duplessis Invitational at John Ehret High School.

The Crusaders edged Hahnville for the title. Brother Martin did not have an individual champion but placed 10 wrestlers in the top four in the 14 weight classes. Belle Chasse finished third with Archbishop Rummel fourth and Archbishop Shaw finishing fifth.
