Women’s Hoops: Privateers fall short in first of two against Southeastern

HAMMOND, La. – The New Orleans Privateers (3-14, 2-6) got into an early deficit and could not recover in a 69-51 loss to the Southeastern Lady Lions (11-7, 6-2) on Thursday evening at the University Center.

The Privateers fell behind by 12 points after the first quarter as Southeastern came out hot. The Lady Lions hit 9-of-17 shots and had a decided edge on the boards for most of the game. After 10 minutes, Southeastern led 22-10.

New Orleans threatened to erase the entire deficit at one point in the third quarter. The Privateers got the lead down to four points twice as they outscored Southeastern 13-7 in the first near five minutes of the quarter.

Four different Privateers scored in that stretch and seven Privateers were in the point column by the end of the half. Southeastern went to the locker room ahead 34-25.

In the third quarter, the Privateers were held to just 2-of-14 from the field as Southeastern created more distance on the lead heading into the final stanza. The Lady Lions outscored the Privateers 17-10 in the third quarter.

For the game, Southeastern shot 48.2 percent from the field. Hailey Giaratano led the Lady Lions with a game-high 24 points.

INSIDE THE BOX
DeArica Pryor led the way with 13 points for the Privateers and added three steals. Justice Ross scored 12 points and pulled down six boards. Hennessey Luu-Brown added nine points. The Privateers forced 22 turnovers.

Southeastern out-rebounded New Orleans 42-30 and held the Privateers to just four assists on 17 made baskets.

The Privateers will host Southeastern on Saturday at the Lakefront Arena. Tip is scheduled for 2 p.m.
