Women’s Basketball: Southeastern win on the road vs. Islanders

CORPUS CHRISTI – The Southeastern Louisiana University women’s basketball team started off their Texas trip with a 53-46 win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Thursday evening at 5 p.m.

Alexius Horne was on fire tonight as she loaded the scoreboard with 20 points, leading the Lady Lions in points. Natalie Kelly had nine rebounds and five blocks. Hailey Giaratano led in assists with six.

The game opened up with a jump shot from Lady Islander Makinna Serrata with an assist from Alecia Westbrook. Southeastern’s Jen Pierre put up a good jumper with an assist from Horne. The first quarter lead would go to Southeastern as they would continue to sink baskets. By the end of the first quarter, SLU would have a six-point lead.

The second quarter opened up with quick points by TAMU-CC as Serrata and Westbrook would sink a jumper and a layup. Sophomore Taylor Bell would put a layup at the 7:50 mark of the second quarter making the score 14-9. The lead would stay in Southeastern’s hands for the rest of the half as the Lady Lions found their rhythm after a three pointer from Horne, a jumper from Bell and a layup from Chrissy Brown.

The Lady Islanders would continue their trend of scoring the first points of the quarter with a layup from Serrata with an assist from Violeta Verano which was immediately answered by Horne with a layup and assist from Pierre. Giaratano sank a three pointer at 7:20 with an assist from Pierre giving Southeastern a ten-point lead. A&M-Corpus Christi would go on a run as Westbrook, Allen, Serrata, and Jaeda Whitner all scored points. Giaratano would end the third quarter with a slew of points ending the third period 35-26.

The fourth quarter would prove a back-and-forth scoring shootout for both teams as they would continuously score. In the last six minutes of the game Horne put up two three pointers back-to-back. The Lady Islanders would inch closer to the lead as they would only have a five-point deficit after a layup by Westbrook with 31 seconds left in the game. But the Lady Lions would pull out a win, finishing the game 53-46.

Southeastern shot 76.5% of free throws and had a total of 14 assists and seven blocks.

Next up on the road for the Lady Lions will be the UIW Lady Cardinals Saturday at 1 p.m. in San Antonio. The game will be livestreamed on ESPN+ and live stats can be accessed on www.uiwcardinals.com.
