FRISCO, Texas – After recording a Southland Conference-high five weekly awards last season, Nicholls State University guard Cassidy Barrios started her senior campaign by winning the SLC’s first Women’s Basketball Player of the Week of the season, the league office announced Monday evening.

Barrios had strong performances against Power 5 opponents Baylor and Auburn, averaging a double-double with 20.0 points and 10.0 rebounds. Against the fourth-ranked Lady Bears, the senior finished one rebound shy of a double-double and produced over half of the Colonels’ scoring with 20 points in a 39-point output at Baylor.

She then followed the season-opener up with another 20-point showing in addition to 11 rebounds at the WNIT in an 80-59 loss at the hands of Auburn. Barrios’ performance against the Tigers marked her first double-double of the season. The senior was nearly perfect at the free throw line shooting 15-of-16 and dished out five assists throughout the week.

Southland weekly award winners are nominated and voted upon by each school’s sports information director. Voting for one’s own athlete is not permitted. To earn honorable mention, a student-athlete must appear on 25 percent of ballots.

The Colonels continues play in the Preseason WNIT this weekend (Nov. 16-17) with two games at Texas State. Nicholls will square off against the host Bobcats at 6:30 p.m. on Friday and will play either Delaware or Montana State at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
