THIBODAUX, La. – A cold offensive stretch for the Nicholls State University women’s basketball team was too much to overcome against Central Arkansas Saturday as the Colonels suffered their first league loss at home, falling 61-50 at Stopher Gymnasium.

Nicholls (7-12, 6-6 SLC) caught fire to end the first quarter with an 11-0 run to take a 16-13 lead but combined for just four field goals in the second and third frames. UCA (8-11, 6-5 SLC) built a 13-point edge heading into the fourth and despite Nicholls starting the final period with the first six points, the Colonels were never able to get any closer as UCA swept the season series.

Sophomore Chelsea Cain scored a team-high 20 points to lead the Red and Gray, while adding five rebounds and a pair of steals. Anna McKendree, who made her first start of the season, scored 11 points in 38 minutes on the court.

The Colonels finished at 40.5 percent from the field, helped by a 6-for-7 fourth quarter. UCA totaled 47 percent and went inside for the bulk of its points, outscoring Nicholls 42-16 in the paint.

Lucy Ibeh also scored 20 points in the game, with Savanna Walker adding 15.

Nicholls will play a stretch of three games in five days as they head to Northwestern State on Monday to make up last Wednesday’s postponed game. Then the Colonels will host HBU at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 24 to kick off a women’s/men’s doubleheader.
