Women’s Basketball: Colonels fall at Abilene Christian, 76-66
ABILENE, Texas – Senior Cassidy Barrios recorded her 16th double-double of the season for the Nicholls State University women’s basketball team, but it was not enough as the Colonels were defeated by Abilene Christian, 76-66, Wednesday night at the Maybee Complex.
The loss put Nicholls a 2-2 on its current five-game road swing. For the season, the Colonels slip to 13-10 overall and 7-4 in the Southland.
Barrios led Nicholls with 20 points and 10 rebounds but made just 4 of 13 from the field. The Colonels were held in check offensively against ACU, finishing at 34.7 percent shooting. A large chunk of the misses came from behind the arc, as Nicholls matched its season-high of 24 3-point attempts, but made only four.
Airi Hamilton and Chrystal Ezechukwu joined Barrios in double figures with 11 points each, but both shot under 50 percent as well.
Nicholls saw its largest lead in the first quarter at 7-3. Barrios scored off of a Tykeria Williams steal, but ACU ended the quarter with a 16-14 advantage.
In the second, the Wildcats pushed the margin to as much as nine. Nicholls was 0-11 from 3-point range, while Makayla Mabry sparked ACU’s long-range attack with 3 of 6 from downtown.
The Colonels cut the deficit to five in the third, but ACU answered with a 9-0 run. The lead stayed in double figures until midway through the fourth. Nicholls never came any closer than eight points the rest of the way.
Sara Williamson had a game-high 24 points for the home team, with Mabry adding 16. Williamson shot 11 of 14 from the floor on the night.
Nicholls will head to Houston to play HBU on Saturday, Feb. 9. Tipoff in Sharp Gym is scheduled for 2 p.m. and will be streamed on the Southland Digital Network.
