Women’s Basketball: Colonels defeat TSU, 58-57, to sweep UTEP classic

EL PASO, Texas – The Nicholls State University women’s basketball team headed to El Paso, Texas this weekend searching for its first win of the season, and came home with two as the Colonels edged Texas Southern, 58-57, Saturday night.

Nicholls (2-4) looked to be headed to a comfortable win over the Lady Tigers with an 11-point lead with just over four minutes remaining, but Texas Southern (1-3) made a late push to make it a one-point game in the final seconds.

The Colonels turned the ball over on the inbounds at midcourt and Niya Mitchell raced down the court but missed a contested layup through traffic as time expired.

Cassidy Barrios finished with a double-double with 11 points, 14 rebounds, and seven assists. Bree Wilson set a new career high with 10 points, and Airi Hamilton joined them in double figures with 10. Nicholls also received eight-point efforts from post players Bryanna Washington and Chrystal Ezechukwu.

Nicholls shot 46 percent from the field and had a 36-30 edge in rebounding. The Colonels had 16 assists on 22 made field goals, with Wilson chipping in with four helpers.

Texas Southern had two players score 14 points – Marquia Turner and Mitchell. The Lady Tigers had trouble at the free throw line at 4 of 15, while Nicholls made 10 of 13.

The Colonels will make their regular season home debut on Wednesday, Nov. 28 against Southern. Tipoff is scheduled for 11:30 a.m.
