WACO, Texas – The Nicholls State University women’s basketball team received a game-high 20 points from senior guard Cassidy Barrios, but the No. 4/5 Baylor Lady Bears won handily in the teams’ season opener with a 100-39 victory over the Colonels Tuesday night in the Ferrell Center.

Barrios was the lone Colonel to reach double figures, helped by a 9-for-10 night at the free throw line and finished a rebound shy of a double-double with nine. Airi Hamilton was the second leading scorer with five points and added four rebounds, while freshman Adrian Mann led the team with three steals.

Baylor (1-0) had seven players reach double digits, led by All-American Kalani Brown with 13 points. The Lady Bears shot 61 percent from the field and held Nicholls to 22.6.

The game was quickly out of reach for the Colonels as the Red and Gray did not crack the scoring column until 1:23 remaining in the first quarter. Barrios scored in the paint off of an offensive rebound and ended the drought at 24-2.

In the second, Barrios hit a 3-pointer to extend the Colonels’ streak to 282 consecutive games with at least one 3-pointer. Nicholls made four from behind the arc for the game but shot just 21.1 percent.

Nicholls had a team-high 14 points in the second period, but Baylor held a commanding 54-19 advantage. The Lady Bears then limited the Red and Gray to 10 points in each of the final quarters en route to reaching 100 points. They were the first Colonel opponent to score 100 since a 100-75 loss at Troy on Dec. 14, 2016.

Nicholls will play SEC member Auburn on Friday, Nov. 9 in the opening round of the Preseason WNIT. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
