WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: Barrios named Southland Player of the Week for second time
FRISCO, Texas — For the second time this season, Nicholls State University junior guard Cassidy Barrios has been selected as Southland Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday afternoon.
Barrios averaged 18.0 points, 15.0 rebounds, and 5.5 assists as Nicholls split its two games for the week. In Saturday’s win at HBU, Barrios racked up 24 points and a career-high 20 rebounds as the Colonels rallied from an 11-point halftime deficit for a 73-61 victory. Earlier in the week, she nearly recorded a triple-double against Stephen F. Austin after she totaled 12 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists with zero turnovers. For the week, she connected on 12 of 13 at the free throw line and added four steals and two blocks.
The Raceland native has recorded a double-double in each of the Colonels’ four conference games and has eight on the season. She ended the week ranked fifth in the Southland in scoring, second in rebounding and steals and sixth in assists.
Barrios was previously named SLC player of the week following the Colonels’ opening game at SMU where she had 18 points and a then-career-high 16 rebounds. Tykeria Williams also won the award on Dec. 4.
Nicholls heads back on the road for a matchup Wednesday against rival McNeese. Tipoff in Burton Coliseum is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
