FRISCO, Texas – Nicholls State University junior guard Cassidy Barrios has been named to the 2017-18 Preseason All-Southland Second Team, as the league office announced Monday its preseason women’s basketball teams.

A starter of all 30 games last season, Barrios was one of eight automatic selections on the 10-member preseason squad after earning third-team honors at the conclusion of last season.

A native of Raceland, Louisiana, Barrios led the Colonels in scoring (15.4 ppg.), rebounding (7.3), field goal percentage (.468) and assists (2.8) in her sophomore campaign. She was among the leaders in the SLC in seven different categories, ranking eighth in scoring and field goal percentage, seventh in rebounding and free throw percentage, 12th in assists and blocks (0.9) and sixth in steals (2.2).

Due to injuries, Barrios was forced to play out of position in the Colonel lineup. She recorded the fifth-most double-doubles in the Southland last season with seven and reached double figures in scoring in all but two games. She also poured in a season-high 23 points in two different games and had seven 20-point efforts.

The Colonel women’s basketball team opens its season on Nov. 10 at SMU. The first home game is scheduled for Nov. 14 against Spring Hill College.
