When you think about it, the 2021 season for the Saints was pretty amazing. New Orleans averaged only 21.4 points a game but still won nine of them.

What could the Saints do with another outstanding defensive season but also a strong offense to go along with it?

I believe we are fixing to find out.

The Saints have addressed a ton of needs on that side the ball.

They needed speed on the outside so they traded twice to get up in the first round to draft wideout Chris Olave.

In a one hour glimpse at practice Saturday, Olave was smooth and fast. It is hard to imagine him not being a key contributor.

Add Jarvis Landry to the mix, along with the return of a healthy Michael Thomas and the Saints have the makings of a very good passing game.

If Landry can give the Saints what Emmanuel Sanders gave them in 2020 (61 catches, 5 touchdowns, and 33 catches for first downs), the Saints will be the most improved team at receiver in the NFL.

Offensive tackle Trevor Penning is just flat out huge.  You can watch all the tape you want, but you have to see him up close to understand what 6-foot-7, 325 pounds and a massive wingspan truly looks like.

If Penning can capably fill the void left by Terron Armstead, the Saints can have a complete offense.

A four wide set of Olave, Thomas, Landry, and Marquez Callaway is formidable.

Last season, Callaway made a huge leap from 21 receptions to 48. His yards per reception improved 10.1 to 15.2. Callaway has six career TD receptions, all last season.

The former UDFA and Tre’Quan Smith were the Saints best receiving options last season.  Now they are potentially fourth and fifth.

That is improvement.

The only question I have at this point is, when the do the New Orleans Saints do the next best thing? That is, sign Chiefs free agent running back Darrel Williams?

The former LSU and John Ehret High School standout is the perfect compliment to Alvin Kamara.

He is a bull, but one with soft hands.

As a part-time player last season, Williams had exactly 1,000 yards from scrimmage including 47 receptions for just under 10 yards a catch.

Williams, like fellow former Tigers who recently signed with the hometown team in Jarvis Landry and Tyrann Mathieu, are the perfect fits for your New Orleans Saints.

The NFL is a league that rewards points. Scoring lots of them.

Last season, the top seven teams in points scored totaled 79 wins. None had a losing season.

The top four teams in points scored – Dallas, Tampa Bay, Buffalo and Kansas City – averaged 12 wins in 2021.

Last year, Saints head coach Sean Payton admitted that his team had to play a certain brand of football. The gameplan was conservative on offense, hoping to win the kicking game and play great defense.

That works, but only to a point. No one understands that better than new head coach Dennis Allen and general manager Mickey Loomis.

Quarterback Jameis Winston will have plenty of weapons. The supporting cast around him is loads better.

For Winston, the offseason couldn’t have gone any better.

Deshaun Watson isn’t coming here, and loads of talent is.
