LAKE CHARLES – First-year McNeese head coach Frank Wilson added four players to the Cowboy Football signing class on Wednesday to bring the total number of signees to 12.

McNeese signed eight players during the early signing period in December.

Seven of the signees are on the defensive side of the ball and five on offense. Five players are Louisiana natives, five from Texas, one from Kansas and one from Missouri.

Wilson mentioned that he’s keeping 9-10 scholarships open to pursue other players following the spring whether that would be high school, portal transfers or JUCO players.

“We’re going to take the time and fill the needs of our football team,” said Wilson. “We will find the right fit.”

Wilson also talked about the importance of recruiting the state of Louisiana.

“That was a huge emphasis,” he said. “We wanted to get back home. Get back to Louisiana.”

On Wednesday, the Cowboys signed one offensive player and three on defense.

Cornerback Rae’kwon Starks is rated as a three-star DB by 247Sports and Rivals out of Helen Cox High School. He was listed as one of the top recruits out of the New Orleans metro area and received offers from Arkansas, Houston, Louisiana Tech, ULL, UTSA, Tulane, Southern Miss, UAB and Utah State to name a few.

Running back Josh Parker out of Catholic HS in Baton Rouge was named the 2019 Warrick Dunn Courage Award recipient for overcoming adversity. In 2019, Parker rushed for 1,184 yards and 14 touchdowns while leading his team to a 12-1 record and state runner-up finish.

Safety Quad Wilson is the son of Frank Wilson and was a two-time first team all-district selection out of Brandeis HS in San Antonio. He recorded 16 career interceptions including nine in 2018 and totaled 100 or more tackles in back-to-back seasons.

Leon Young is a defensive lineman from Cedar Hills HS in Dallas. He was named the District 7-6A Defensive Player of the Year as a senior and a two-time first team all-district player who helped lead his team to a district championship as a senior and a 9-3 record. He was also a regional champion and state qualifier power-lifter.

In addition to announcing the signing class, Wilson also introduced his coaching staff that has been hired – offensive coordinator Ronnie Letson, defensive coordinator Grady Brown, special teams coordinator Gary Hyman, defensive backs Deron Wilson, linebackers Will Thomas, wide receivers Blaine Gautier and running backs Landon Hoefer, the only returning coach from the previous staff. Wilson still needs to hire offensive and defensive line coaches.
