Williams duo leads LA Tech to road win over Alabama A&M

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Terran and Cobe Williams combined for 36 points as the Louisiana Tech Men’s Basketball team hung on for their first road win of the season, defeating Alabama A&M by a final score of 80-75 on Wednesday night inside the newly-opened A&M Event Center.

LA Tech (3-2) managed to overcome its 23 turnovers by sinking a season-high 13 three-pointers. Six of those came from Terran Williams who posted a career-high 20 points. Five of those deep balls came in the first half, but the sixth was the biggest as it gave the road ‘Dogs a 76-67 advantage with 1:30 to go.

Alabama A&M (0-5) never went away though, keeping the deficit within 10 points as they trailed almost the entire night. The home ‘Dogs made it very interesting late, draining back-to-back threes to cut the deficit to three at 78-75 with only 17 seconds left.

Terran Williams stepped up big again, knocking down two free throws to ice the game.

LA Tech connected on nine triples (out of 12 made field goals) through the first 20 minutes alone, which helped provide them with a slim 35-33 advantage at the midway point.

Six quick points to start the second stanza forced a timeout by Alabama A&M. They countered with six straight points of their own to get back to within two at 41-39.

The other Williams, Cobe, started to take control of the contest. He scored 14 of his 16 points in the back half to go along with six assists and four steals, helping LA Tech push its largest lead out to 10 on four different occasions.

For the game, LA Tech shot 50.0 percent from the field (29-58), 44.8 percent from long range (13-29) and 69.2 percent from the foul line (9-13). Keaston Willis was the third Bulldog to score double-digit points with 11. He also pulled down a team-high eight rebounds.

A&M could not match the field goals made by LA Tech, but they did make 10 more free throws. Hicks ended up with a game-high 22 points for the home team

“Our turnovers were self-inflicted. I think we are not being fundamental enough. At the end of the day, they were not getting into passing lanes, we were just throwing the ball out of bounds. We have to be more fundamental and make the easy play, not the home run play. We will learn and grow from it. Proud of the guys for battling on the road.”
