NEW ORLEANS – Issac Williams capped the drama in the 11th inning with a walk-off single and the New Orleans Privateers outlasted the UIW Cardinals 9-8 on Sunday to win the series at Maestri Field to cap the celebration of Senior Day and Mother’s Day.

With the win, the Privateers have pulled to within a game of the cluttered Southland standings. Two teams lead the pack at 12-9 while four including the Privateers are level at 11-10 in league play heading into the last full week of the regular season.

DECISIONS
Dylan Cunningham pitched two strong innings with three strikeouts to earn his first win as a Privateer. Steve Hayward was charged with the loss after allowing a run on a hit and two walks over three innings.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Fast forward to the end where it was another instance of the Privateers having to reset after a late Cardinals rally. Down by four through six innings, UIW’s bats went to work almost exclusively using the long ball to get back in it. Four home runs including the tying one by Wilson Ehrhardt erased that deficit and tied the game at 8-8.

After both teams went quietly in the 10th, Cunningham quickly got the Privateers back in the dugout in the 11th. That’s when Tyler Bischke walked to lead off the frame and Anthony Herron Jr. executed a sacrifice bunt that turned into a throwing error which put runners on second and third.

Williams came to the plate and took the first pitch through the left side of the infield, scoring Bischke to give the Privateers the series.

INSIDE THE BOX
The Privateers went for 17 hits on the day. Seven of them came from Kasten Furr and Amani Larry.

Jeissy De la Cruz went 2-for-4 with three RBI. Pearce Howard added to his all-time hits total as he went 2-for-6 with a run scored.

Kyle Khachadourian lasted seven innings and struck out four batters. He has thrown 18.1 innings over his last three starts.

NEXT UP
UNO will play their final regular season conference series at Northwestern State but it will now start a day earlier. The Privateers and Demons open their series Thursday night a 6:30 followed a Friday night contest, also at 6:30, and a Saturday finale at slated for 1 p.m.

The Privateers’ midweek contest at South Alabama originally slated on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. has been canceled to accommodate the change in Southland scheduling.
