Weber, St. Thomas More in dominant position after first round of LHSAA Division II golf finals

ALLSTATE SUGAR BOWL LHSAA STATE GOLF CHAMPIONSHIPS — Division II Boys First-Day Story

CARENCRO – St. Thomas More posted three of the day’s top five scores, led by the two-over-par of senior Matt Weber, and will take a nine-stroke lead into the final round of the Division II boys competition in the Allstate Sugar Bowl LHSAA State Golf Championships.

Weber posted a 36-38—74 score, while teammates Sam Stonecipher carded a 77 to stand in solo second place and Zach Hardy had a 79 to stand tied for fourth going into Tuesday’s final round over the 6,516-yard par-72 Farm d’Allie course.
STM, which finished as runner-up last year, had a 314 team total for that nine-stroke margin over St. Louis at 323. Defending champion Benton is in third at 341 and tournament host Teurlings Catholic is in fourth place at 349.

Weber had two birdies on the front side and had a five-stroke lead on the field before a double bogey on the par-three 17th hole.

Zane Blanchard of Assumption was in solo third place with a 78 and Brett Ardoin of St. Louis and Ryan Steed of Benton were tied with Hardy for fourth at 79. Coy Taylor of DeRidder and Collin Darby of St. Louis are tied for seventh at 80 heading into Tuesday’s final round.
