Warriors eliminate Gold Nuggets in NAIA opening round

SALEM, Ore. — Xavier University of Louisiana volleyball’s hopes of a first-ever trip to the NAIA National Championship Final Site were dashed again Saturday. Corban defeated the Gold Nuggets 25-20, 25-20, 25-16 in the opening round.

The Gold Nuggets (26-7) were eliminated in the first round for the eighth consecutive year.

The Warriors (21-11), ranked 22nd, outhit XULA .359 to .156 and got 10 kills apiece from Regan Murray and Adriana Aguayo. Both had 16 attacks; Murray hit .563, and Aguayo hit .500.

Jaida Dowd had a match- and career-high 12 kills for XULA. Dowd hit .308 in 26 attacks and had seven digs.

Kayla Black had nine kills and seven digs for the Gold Nuggets, Eva Le Guillou had 26 assists, two aces and five digs, and Beatrice Formilan had nine digs.

Demi Winters had seven kills and hit .455 in 11 attacks for Corban, and Winters and Tori Edwards had three blocks apiece. Six of the Warriors’ eight attackers hit .429 or higher.
