FRISCO, Texas – Marcel Volz earned Southland Newcomer of the Year and three New Orleans Privateers men’s tennis student-athletes earned First Team recognition by the Southland conference on Thursday morning.

NEWCOMER OF THE YEAR
Volz was spectacular on the season, amassing a 9-1 overall record and a 5-0 conference mark. He won four of those five conference matches at flight three and earned Southland Newcomer of the Year for his efforts. He is the first men’s tennis player to win the award since Rui Silva (2013).

FIRST TEAM
Volz was one of a trio of first team all-conference Privateers in singles. He was joined by Max Heinzel and Johannes Klein.

Heinzel also finished with an undefeated Southland mark and went 9-2 on the regular season. In his first full year, Heinzel was a force at flight two. He won seven of his matches in straight sets and ended the regular season on a five-match winning streak.

Klein made his debut in the Privateers’ first Southland match against Abilene Christian and he hit the ground running. He routinely outlasted opponents, starting with that season debut where he won in three sets. He also had three-set victories against UIW, Lamar and Nicholls.

DOUBLES
Volz and Luke Joujan earned Second Team All-Southland honors in flight three doubles. Both new to the Lakefront, the duo teamed up for a 2-1 mark in doubles. Their wins came by a 6-4 score line against UIW and a 6-2 decision against Lamar.

NEXT UP
The Privateers will open the Southland tournament on Saturday against Lamar. The match is scheduled for a 10 a.m. start.
