Volleyball: Tulane stymied by SMU, falls in straight sets

NEW ORLEANS – Tulane volleyball fell in straight sets (25-12, 25-18, 25-18) against SMU Sunday afternoon at Avron B. Fogelman Arena in the Devlin Fieldhouse. The Green Wave drop to 13-14 overall, 2-12 The American with the loss.

How It Happened
SMU recorded a team attack percentage of .464 in the opening set to win, 25-15. Freshman outside hitter Lexie Douglas and sophomore right side hitter Alexis Silver led Tulane with four first-set kills. Senior setter Justine Bowers, coming off a triple-double (12 kills, 12 digs, 49 assists) against Tulsa Friday, tallied 12 assists in the first.

Douglas notched three more kills in the second, but Tulane dropped the set, 25-18. The Green Wave recorded a team attack percentage of .073, hindering their ability to stage a formidable rally. Sophomore Kaylie McHugh, on the heels of a 32-dig performance against Tulsa, added six digs to her total in the set.

Tulane showed renewed spirit in the third set, fighting neck-and-neck with SMU and exchanging points throughout the frame. Tied at 18, however, SMU went on a 7-0 run to seal the match victory in the third, winning 25-18. Sophomore middle hitter Erika Hansel led with a set-high six kills (.545 attack percentage) in the third.

Silver and Hansel each finished with eight kills, while Douglas tallied seven kills and eight digs. Bowers notched 20 assists, and McHugh posted 12 digs in the match.

Tulane embarks on its second-to-last road trip of the season next weekend, heading to Orlando, Fla. and Tampa, Fla. for matches against UCF and USF, respectively. The Green Wave play UCF, 7 p.m. Friday, and then face USF, 12 p.m., Sunday.
