Can anyone topple Country Day?

The Cajuns have rolled through their 2019 schedule in impressive fashion.

Country Day, No. 1 in the latest Division V LHSAA power ratings, remained unbeaten Thursday by rebounding from a slow start to down E.D. White Catholic 18-25, 25-23, 25-14, 25-19 in Old Metairie.

After losing the first set, only the third set Country Day has lost all season, the Cajuns battled back to win a very close second set and then controlled the final two sets for the victory.

Nia Washington had 15 kills, even digs and a block, Kelsey Dinvaut had 10 kills and a block and Kamryn Thomas finished with nine kills. Ashlyn Barwick produced 44 assists, Kate Launey had 16 digs and Sydney Wright finished with nine digs for the Cajuns.

Country Day (19-0) will travel to McGehee next Tuesday at 5 p.m. while the Cardinals (17-5) play at Dominican Saturday at 10 a.m.

While Country Day has won three straight Division V state titles and has a huge win over Mount Carmel Academy, the five-time defending Division I state champion Cubs have been impressive as well.

After losing a pair of matches last weekend, Mount Carmel has bounced back nicely.

The five-time defending Cubs faced long-time rival and traditional power St. Joseph’s Academy in Baton Rouge Thursday and Mount Carmel prevailed in four sets, winning 25-22, 21-25, 25-18, 25-16.

Emily Meyer led the way for the Cubs with 24 kills while Tory Frught had 41 assists. Lindsey Wickersham finished with 27 digs and Cecilia Brown had eight blocks. Julia Dwelle topped the Redstickers with 15 kills, four digs and two blocks, Simone Moreau had 42 digs and Morgan Perry finished with seven kills and five blocks.

Mount Carmel is No. 1 in the most recent Division I LHSAA power ratings while St. Joseph’s is eighth. It was the second win for the Cubs over the Redstickers this season.

Both teams return to action next Tuesday as Mount Carmel (19-6) hosts Archbishop Hannan at 5:30 p.m. while St. Joseph’s (14-12) will play at Denham Springs at 6 p.m.
