Area Prep Volleyball Report for Thursday, Sept. 23

After having its first four matches postponed, Riverdale finally got to open its season on the road at John Ehret and the Rebels made it a successful debut, whipping the Patriots 25-9, 25-12, 25-11. It was the first match of the year for Ehret as well.

Maelyn Forester led Riverdale with 11 kills and Morgan Williams had 17 assists. Isabel Cox had five digs.

Riverdale coach Kim Buford was very pleased with the effort.

“After practicing only two days, we managed to play a balanced, fluid match,” Buford said.

Riverdale will host Patrick Taylor next Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. while John Ehret is back in action today at South Plaquemines at 4:30 p.m.

Sarah T. Reed opened its season way back on Sept. 1 but had to wait 21 days to play another match after seven matches were postponed following Hurricane Ida.

The three-week layoff had little impact as the Olympians handled Cohen 25-8, 25-12, 25-13 at home Wednesday.

Keara Kyles served eight aces while Janae Martin served six for the Olympians. Mya Robins had four kills, Tram Nguyen had three, Hailey Nguyen had two and Teen Johprakone finished with one kill and it was a game-winner. Naomi Garcia and Seaira Franklin each had a dig.

Both teams return to action today. Sarah T. Reed (2-0) is at home against Sophie B. Wright at 5 p.m. while the Green Hornets (0-2) travel to Landry at 4:30 p.m.

Belle Chasse bounced back from a tough loss to Sacred Heart with a hard fought 25-19, 25-18, 21-25, 16-25, 15-8 victory at St. Martin’s Episcopal.

Nya St. Cyr had 11 kills, 14 blocks and eight digs, Kassidi Barthelemy had seven kills, 22 digs, 13 assists, four blocks and served three aces and Jerne Colin finished with 13 assists and 15 digs for the Cardinals.

Both teams are back in action today. Belle Chasse (4-1) travels to De La Salle today at 5:30 p.m. while the Saints (1-5) lost their third straight match and travel to Newman today at 5:30 p.m.
