Based on results and performance over the past three years, Mount Carmel Academy and Pope John Paul II have been the two best volleyball programs in Louisiana. Both teams have won three consecutive state championships in their respective classes, with the Cubs doing so in Division I while the Jaguars have dominated Division IV.

The two powers collide this afternoon in Slidell at 5:30 p.m. with both sides coming off of victories Monday.

Mount Carmel dismissed Northshore 25-17, 25-12, 25-20 in Lakeview as junior hitter Ellie Holzman put away 24 kills. Tori Frught had 41 assists for the Cubs (21-3). Carly Merry had 13 kills for Northshore (10-4).

Pope John Paul II has won 16 straight matches after handling Parkview Baptist 25-14, 25-14, 25-19 Monday. Just last week, the Jaguars (17-1) handled Northshore 25-11, 25-19, 25-9.

Over the last three years of their trio of state titles each, Mount Carmel and Pope John Paul II have played on even terms, splitting six matches.

Last year, the Cubs and Jaguars met three times with Pope John Paul II emerging victorious twice. The two schools split a pair of matches in 2015. Mount Carmel won the only meeting between the two schools in 2014.
