Volleyball Report: Mount Carmel rallies past St. Joseph’s, Patrick Taylor downs KIPP

The two volleyball teams that have dominated Division I in this century squared off in Baton Rouge Thursday evening. Things started well for homestanding St. Joseph’s Academy but three-time defending state champion Mount Carmel had the final say.

The Cubs spotted the Redstickers a set before rallying for a 18-25, 25-18, 25-17, 25-15 victory.

Once again, it was junior Ellie Holzman leading the way with 24 kills for the Cubs (3-0). Sophomore Amber Haynes topped St. Joseph’s (2-2) with 11 kills and 17 digs.

Mount Carmel outlasted St. Joseph’s Academy three sets to two for the Division I state title in 2016 and took down the Redstickers in three sets in the 2014 final. Mount Carmel also won the state championship in 2006, 2010 and 2012 The Redstickers beat the Cubs in the 2002, 2007, 2009 and 2013 final. The Redstickers also won the state title in 2001, 2003, 2004 and 2008. Either Mount Carmel or St. Joseph’s Academy has won the Division I state championship in 13 of the 16 seasons since the turn of the century.

The two sides will get accustomed to each other, meeting again in the Red-Hot Sticker Classic later this month before St. Joseph’s travels to New Orleans to take on the Cubs on Oct. 5. Mount Carmel will travel to Vandebilt Catholic next Thursday at 5:30 p.m. while St. Joseph’s Academy plays at St. Amant next Wednesday at 6 p.m.

Patrick Taylor improved their record to 3-2 beating KIPP Renaissance 25-22, 25-14, 25-10.

The Tigers were led by Grace Babin, who served 12 aces while Olivia Austin added seven aces. Ayree Johnson had five kills while Erin Wallace added four.

Patrick Taylor returns to action this weekend in the Grace King tournament this weekend. KIPP (1-3) will host Carver Monday.
