Volleyball Report: Chapelle rebounds with win over Dominican, PJP set for rematch with Hannan
After losing three of four games in the prestigious Vandebilt Catholic Tournament at the Pontchartrain Center over the weekend, Archbishop Chapelle was reeling a bit heading into Tuesday’s District 8-1 contest in Metairie, having lost four of its last five games overall.
The Chipmunks rebounded in fine fashion, downing Dominican 25-23, 18-25, 25-15, 25-21. The victory avenged an earlier district loss at Dominican in five sets on Oct. 12.
This time around, Chapelle had the upper hand. Hailey Melerine was a force with 10 kills, Rebecca LaCour had 22 assists and Meagan Scuderi had 33 digs for the Chipmunks (20-15, 1-1). Hannah McGowan and Sarah Wild each had nine kills while Olivia Peyton had six blocks for Dominican (23-13, 1-2).
Chapelle came in 14th in the latest LHSAA power ratings and helped their case for a home match in the opening round of the upcoming Division I playoffs by beating Dominican, which was sixth in the power ratings.
The Chipmunks will step up to an even bigger stage to play at three-time defending Division I state champion and district favorite Mount Carmel Thursday at 5:30 p.m. in the first of two meetings in seven days for the district rivals. Dominican is back in action today at 4:30 p.m. at home against a tough Division II opponent in Cabrini. The Crescents downed Dominican in straight sets back on Sept. 11 at Cabrini.
Three-time defending Division IV state champion Pope John Paul II remained unbeaten in state, rolling over St. Thomas Aquinas 25-10, 25-9, 25-15.
The Jaguars (30-3) face a showdown at home today against District 4-IV rival Archbishop Hannan at 5:30 p.m. in a rematch of the last two state championship matches, both won by the Jaguars.
