Volleyball Report: Area teams vie for top-seeds, home matches, playoff berths

With just 10 days remaining in the regular season, area volleyball teams are battling for top-seeds, home matches in the opening round and playoff berths.

In the most recent power rankings, three-time defending Division I state champion Mount Carmel had a slight edge over East Ascension in Division I. Archbishop Chapelle was in the 15th position with Hahnville in the 16th spot as both try to earn first-round home matches. Fighting to get into the playoffs are Bonnabel, at No. 28 and Chalmette, in the 32nd spot. John Ehret is 36th, on the outside looking in and needs a good finish to get in.

In Division II, Teurlings Catholic, the defending Division III champion, would appear to have the top spot locked up with St. Scholastica in the second position. The Doves (24-7) are in action Monday are in District 5-II action today at Franklinton at 4 p.m. SSA swept the Demons in straight sets at home on Oct. 10. Fighting to earn first-round home matches are Academy of Our Lady (16-7), currently 13th and playing at St. Mary’s Academy today at 4:30 p.m., Belle Chasse at No. 15 and Warren Easton at No. 17. Battling to get into the playoffs are Riverdale at 28th, McDonogh 35 at No. 34 and Landry-Walker at 36th.

In Division III, Vandebilt Catholic is on top and has a clear edge on Parkview Baptist. Fighting for first round home matches are Loranger at 13th and De La Salle at 18th. Battling to get into the playoffs are Lusher at No. 31 and McMain in the 35th spot.

In Division IV, three-time defending state champion Pope John Paul II has the top spot locked up with Notre Dame and Riverside battling for the second spot. The Rebels (25-6) host a big power point match against Vandebilt Catholic today at 5:30 p.m. Fighting to get first round home matches are Haynes at No. 18 and St. Mary’s Academy at 19th. St. Mary’s (7-10) hosts Academy of Our Lady today at 4:30 p.m. Fighting to get into the playoffs are Sophie B. Wright at No. 33, Bogalusa at 34th and St. James at No. 35.

In Division V, McGehee lost its first two matches of the season this past weekend in the Vandebilt Catholic Tournament at the Pontchartrain Center but remains solid in the top spot with defending state champion Country Day solid in the second spot. Fighting for home matches in the first round are Crescent City at No. 16 and St. Katherine Drexel at No. 17. St. Katharine (12-11) is at Dominican today at 5:30 p.m. Fighting to get in are Ridgewood at 34th and Christ Episcopal School at No. 35.
