Volleyball Playoffs: Nine area teams advance to Kenner with wins Friday

Nine area teams advanced to the LHSAA quarterfinals with victories Friday.

In Division III, No. 7 Ursuline Academy is back in a familiar place, in the quarterfinals at Kenner’s Pontchartrain Center next week.

The Lions saw to that with a four-set victory over No. 10 Morgan City, winning 25-19, 25-27, 25-19, 25-12 Friday afternoon in uptown New Orleans.

Megan Pulizzano was a force with 21 kills, Annabel Beatmann produced 32 digs, Kaitlyn Ables provided 21 assists, Britton Owens had three blocks and Sydney Cuneo finished with three aces.

Ursuline (15-7) will No. 2 seed St. Michael the Archangel on Thursday in Kenner. The Warriors whipped No. 15 Church Point 25-9, 25-6, 25-12.

Also in Division III, top seed E.D. White Catholic advanced with a 25-5, 25-11, 25-6 win over Booker T. Washington of New Orleans. The Cardinals will next face No. 9 Pearl River in the quarterfinals.

The Ninth-seeded Rebels went on the road and downed No. 8 Iota 28-30, 25-20, 25-22, 25-15 to advance to Kenner.

No. 5 Lutcher advanced with a 25-14, 25-16, 25-20 win over No. 21 Iowa. The Bulldogs will meet defending state champion Cabrini in the quarterfinals after the Crescents dismissed No. 13 Rayne 25-11, 25-9, 25-11.

No. 3 Archbishop Hannan easily advanced, beating N o. 14 Brusly 25-16, 25-9, 25-12. The Hawks will take on No. 11 St. Louis Catholic in the quarterfinals after the Saints downed No. 6 Haynes Academy 25-11, 25-21, 25-19 in Metairie.

In Division IV, No. 4 Sacred Heart of New Orleans dispatched No. 13 Thomas Jefferson from the playoffs with a 25-10, 25-10, 25-2 victory. The Cardinals will take on No. 5 Notre Dame in the quarterfinals.

No. 6 Catholic of New Iberia took care of No. 22 St. Thomas Aquinas 25-16, 25-12, 25-15. The Panthers must next face No. 3 Pope John Paul II as the Jaguars handled Patrick Taylor in straight sets on Thursday.

No. 10 Lafayette Christian came to New Orleans and upset No. 7 Newman 25-16, 23-25, 25-13, 25-21.

The Knights advance to take on No. 2 John Curtis Christian after the Patriots continued to impress with a 25-18, 25-15, 25-11 win over University High.

In Division V, No. 11 McGehee downed No. 6 St. Martin’s Episcopal 21-25, 25-14, 25-23, 25-20 in Metairie. The Hawks will face No. 3 Westminster Christian in Kenner.

No. 15 Northlake Christian pulled the big upset, going on the road to Shreveport and surprising No. 2 Calvary Baptist in straight sets, winning 25-11, 25-13, 25-23.

The Wolverines will meet No. 10 Central Catholic in the quarterfinals.
