Volleyball Playoffs: Many local schools advance on busy Thursday
Several area volleyball programs were victorious in LHSAA playoff action Thursday.
In Division I, No. 2 Mount Carmel Academy and No. 7 Mandeville captured opening round matches.
In opening In opening round play in Division II, No. 5 Belle Chasse handled No. 28 David Thibodaux 25-14, 25-12, 25-14 at home.
Nya St. Cyr contributed 12 kills and seven blocks, Ellen Rehrig had 10 kills, 13 assists, four aces and four digs, Jerne Colin had eight kills, 14 assists, six digs and a block, Cacie Petrovich had 12 digs and two aces and Tylen Bell served four aces.
The Cardinals (32-9) will host No. 12 Breaux Bridge Saturday at 11 a.m. in regional round play.
Also in Division II, No. 7 Academy of Our Lady advanced to the state tournament in Lafayette with a solid 25-18, 25-12, 25-14 win over No. 26 West Ouachita in Marrero.
Jaci Carmadelle led the attack with nine kills and 10 digs, Abby Cao had 23 assists and three aces and Cassidy Jones finished with four blocks.
The Penguins (24-10) advance to the regional round to host No. 10 McDonogh 35 today at 5 p.m.
Also in Division II, No. 11 Riverdale overcame a deficit to defeat No. 22 LaGrange 21-25, 25-18, 25-13, 29-27 in Jefferson.
Kyrie Hunter paced the Rebels with 12 kills and three digs, Isabelle Ramos had 12 kills and three digs, Morgan Williams finished with 23 assists, six digs and two aces, Arely Rojas had seven kills, 20 digs and an ace and Laila Ponce had 15 digs, two aces and a kill.
Riverdale (21-16) moves into the regional round to take on No. 6 St. Scholastica in Covington.
In Division III, No. 4 Haynes Academy rallied past No. 13 Rayne 25-27, 25-14, 25-16, 25-16 to advance to the state quarterfinals in Lafayette.
No. 3 E.D. White Catholic handled No. 14 Westlake 25-8, 25-10, 25-10 in Thibodaux to advance to the quarterfinals.
Brightlyn Ratcliff led the Cardinals with 12 kills and nine digs, Emory Frerret had six kills and four blocks, Anna-Claire Jones had 22 assists and nine digs and Carly Landry had nine digs.
E.D. White (27-13) will face the winner of No. 11 Iota and No. 6 Lafayette Christian at the Cajundome next Thursday.
In Division IV, top seed Newman handled neighborhood rival and No. 16 seed De La Salle 25-8, 25-6, 25-12 to advance to the quarterfinals.
Newman (36-5) will face No. 8 St. Charles Catholic at the Cajundome next Thursday.
The Comets (19-16) swept No. 9 Loyola Prep 25-20, 25-16, 25-20 in LaPlace. The Greenies swept St. Charles Catholic in three sets in the regular season opener for both teams.
Also in Division IV, No. 2 Pope John Paul II easily handled No. 15 Port Allen 25-5, 25-1, 25-13 Thursday in Slidell.
Kayla Benedic had 12 kills, five digs and three aces, Chloe Smith had eight kills and 21 digs, Ali Tullis had three kills, 32 assists and six aces, Regan McVay had 15 digs and two aces and Kady Benedic finished with four kills and a dig.
The Jaguars (25-8) advance to the state tournament in Lafayette and will face a familiar opponent in District 5-IV rival and No. 7 seed Northlake Christian next Thursday in the quarterfinals at the Cajundome.
The Wolverines (21-13) advanced with a 25-8, 25-13, 25-11 win over 10th-seeded St. Thomas Aquinas.
Abigail Bailey led Northlake Christian with 21 kills, Abigail Drury had 30 assists, Peyton Vitter had seven digs and five aces and Carolyne Willie had 10 digs.
No. 3 John Curtis Christian rolled into the state tournament at Lafayette by drilling No. 19 Acadiana Renaissance 25-9, 25-2, 25-16 in River Ridge.
Jacke Melancon led the Patriots with eight kills, Laiche had 18 assists and four digs, Imani Daniel had three blocks and Hayden Beard served a pair of aces.
John Curtis (30-8) has won 12 straight matches. The Patriots will face the winner of today’s match pitting No. 11 Springfield against No. 6 Academy of the Sacred Heart of New Orleans in the quarterfinals at the Cajundome next Thursday.
In Division V, No. 7 Riverside Academy has advanced to Lafayette as well after winning a thriller over No. 10 St. Martin’s Episcopal 27-25, 25-20, 12-25, 20-25, 15-8 in a match that had wild momentum shifts.
The Rebels were led by Camryn Loving, who had 12 kills, 26 digs, two aces and two digs while Chloe St. Pierre had 11 kills, 35 assists and 13 digs. Myracle Revon had 12 kills, four digs and an assist, Allie Revere finished with eight kills, three assists and three digs and Anna Mistretta served four aces.
Riverside (20-16) will face No. 2 seed Westminster Christian next Thursday in Lafayette. Westminster advanced with a 25-11, 25-6, 25-14 win over No. 15 Covenant Christian.
In Division IV, top seed and defending state champion Country Day rolled over No. 16 Houma Christian 25-7, 25-10, 25-5 to advance to the quarterfinals.
The Cajuns (29-4) will take on the winner of No. 9 McGehee and No. 8 Central Private at Lafayette next Thursday.
