Volleyball: Mount Carmel rebounds at SSA with win on busy Monday
Three-time defending Division I state champion Mount Carmel bounced back from a home loss to St. Joseph’s Academy with an impressive 25-21, 25-21, 25-14 win Monday at St. Scholastica.
As usual, Ellie Holzman led the Cubs (25-5) with 16 kills and four aces while Tori Frught had 36 assists. The MCA defense was good as well. Macie Matherne had 16 digs and Abby Alonzo produced seven blocks for the Cubs. Aixa Crespo topped the Doves (19-4) with 15 kills while Evey Waguespack dished up 19 assists.
The top-ranked team in the latest LHSAA Division I power ratings, Mount Carmel returns to action Wednesday at home in a very tough test against three-time defending Division IV state champion Pope John Paul II. The Jaguars 25-19, 25-13, 25-16 on Sept. 26 at Slidell. SSA returns to District 5-II today at home against Franklinton at 4 p.m.
In a wild match, Academy of Our Lady rallied from two sets down to overcome Warren Easton 17-25, 20-25, 25-10, 25-18, 15-12 at home in a non-district contest Monday.
The Penguins (14-5) return to District 8-II action today at Belle Chasse (10-11) at 5:30 p.m. The loss was the fourth straight for Warren Easton (13-8). The Eagles return to District 7-II play today at 4:30 p.m. at Riverdale (10-10). The Rebels lost at home to Crescent City Christian 25-22, 25-13, 25-15 Monday. The Crescents (14-8) return to action Thursday at home against Country Day at 4:30 p.m.
The defending Division V state champion Country Day Cajuns lost on the road at Vandebilt Catholic 19-25, 25-19, 25-20, 25-21 Monday. The win by the Terriers avenged a loss to the Cajuns in three sets at the St. Joseph’s Academy tournament on Sept. 23.
Country Day (19-3) will host Assumption (13-9) on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. while the Terriers (18-4) travel to Berwick today at 5:30 p.m. in District 8-3A action. Assumption will first play at John Curtis Christian (11-12) today at 5:30 p.m.
