Volleyball: MCA, Fontainebleau, Dominican, Lakeshore, AOL advance to Kenner with wins Saturday

As usual, there will be a heavy New Orleans area representation at the LHSAA State Volleyball Tournament at the Pontchartrain Center in Kenner this week.

In all, 13 of the 40 teams qualifying are from the Greater New Orleans area after results Saturday.

Five-time defending Division I state champion Mount Carmel Academy, Fontainebleau, Dominican, Lakeshore and Academy of Our Lady all advanced to the state tournament with regional round victories Saturday.

In Division I, top seed Mount Carmel handled No. 16 Airline 25-8, 25-16, 25-11. The Cubs (31-7) will face No. 8 St. Amant Thursday in Kenner in the quarterfinals.

No. 3 Dominican dismissed district rival and No. 14 Archbishop Chapelle 25-9, 25-14, 25-19.

Elizabeth Hardouin led Dominican with 12 kills and 14 digs, Kate Baker had 20 assists and 13 digs and Olivia Peyton had six kills and eight blocks.

Dominican (33-11) will face always tough sixth-seeded St. Joseph’s Academy Thursday in the quarterfinals. Dominican split a pair of matches with the Redstickers in the regular season.

No. 5 Fontainebleau whipped No. 12 Ruston 25-13, 25-7, 25-7. The Bulldogs (34-9) will take on No. 4 Dutchtown Thursday.

In Division II, No. 9 Lakeshore went on the road and defeated No. 8 Belle Chasse 25-22, 25-20, 25-19. The Titans (24-13) will meet top seed Teurlings Catholic in the quarterfinals. The Cardinals end their season 31-13.

No. 7 Academy of Our Lady whipped No. 10 Breaux Bridge 25-10, 25-16, 25-14. The Penguins (27-5) are on to the Pontchartrain Center to battle No. 2 Ben Franklin (39-6).

Mandeville, Cabrini, Archbishop Hannan, John Curtis Christian, Pope John Paul II, Country Day, McGehee and Northlake Christian all advanced to the quarterfinals previously with victories.
