Area Prep Volleyball Report for Thursday, Sept. 26

Two powerhouse programs collided in Slidell Wednesday and don’t look now but five-time defending state champion Mount Carmel Academy is getting better and will again be a real threat to win a sixth straight Division I state title despite graduating a host of talent from last year’s team.

The Cubs won their eighth straight match, downing Pope John Paul II 25-17, 25-19, 15-25, 25-16.

Senior Emily Meyer was a force with 25 kills, 17 digs, two blocks and an ace. Senior Tea Jones had 12 kills, four blocks, two digs and an ace and senior Victoria Frught dished out 51 assists to go with 14 digs, four kills and four blocks for Mount Carmel (14-4).

Senior Ansley Tullis led the way for Pope John Paul II with 21 kills, 19 digs, five blocks and one ace while junior Kendall Battistella had 36 assists and 22 digs.

After opening the season with nine straight wins, the Jaguars (11-5) have lost five of their last seven matches against top-flight competition.

Mount Carmel is No. 1 in the new power ratings released by the LHSAA earlier this week in Division I. Pope John Paul II is ninth in the Division IV power ratings.

Both teams return to action next Tuesday. Mount Carmel will travel to Ben Franklin next at 5:30 p.m. while Pope John Paul II (11-5) will host St. Helena at 4:30 p.m.

Playing without its star setter, Ursuline Academy moved above .500 with a 25-15, 25-23, 25-23 home win over Lutcher to snap a three-match losing streak.

Nadia Farley had 14 kills, Annabel Beatman finished with 17 assists and Sydney Cuneo had 12 digs for the Lions (8-7).

Ursuline returns to action Tuesday at Lusher Charter at 5:30 p.m. while the Bulldogs (7-8) dropped below .500. Lutcher will host Hahnville today at 5 p.m.
