Volleyball: Country Day wins RedSticker Classic; Easton, Cox, PJP-Parkview square off

It was a profitable weekend for defending Division V state champion Country Day.

The Cajuns went to Baton Rouge and won the annual Redsticker Classic, defeating host St. Joseph’s Academy 25-18, 20-25, 16-14 in the championship match.

Alex Smith led the way with 12 kills while Kelsey Dinvaut added 10 kills. Mary Tebbe dished up 30 assists. Amber Haynes had eight kills and nine digs for St. Joseph’s while Abigail Haynes had seven kills and eight digs. Fran Okpalobi added seven kills and two blocks for the Redstickers.

Country Day (14-2) went unbeaten in the event, earlier beating St. Joseph’s Academy (8-8) in pool play. Country Day was third in the most recent power rankings released by the LHSAA but fitures to move up.

The Cajuns, who have won seven straight matches, return to action Tuesday at home against Lakeshore at 5:30 p.m. while the Redstickers host Central at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

In top area matches today, Warren Easton (11-4) travels to Helen Cox (9-4) for a 4:30 match. The Eagles have won three straight matches.

Defending Division IV state champion Pope John Paul II (17-1) takes a 16-match win streak into a huge home match against Parkview Baptist (19-2) in a matchup of two of the top programs in the state. The Eagles have lost only to McGehee and East Ascension while the only loss for the Jaguars was out of state.
