NEW ORLEANS – The Cabrini Crescents relied on a balanced offense and fast starts in the first two sets to top the Lakeshore Titans 3-0 (25-15, 25-22, 25-12). With the victory, Cabrini advances to the quarterfinals at the Pontchartrain Center.

Kai Williams and Atira Jells paced the Cabrini offense with 14 and 12 kills respectively. The Crescents also got a substantial contribution from their service game with 11 aces. Jennifer Brue had 37 assists three aces while Jells and Endia Buck had two aces each. Defensively, Buck had 24 digs for the match.

“Our game plan going into this was to be aggressive in serving and to maintain and take some big swings to keep them out of system,” said Coach Kasey Laird-Dennies.

The Titans kept the set close throughout the first 22 rallies. Tied at 11-11 though, Cabrini ripped off a 13-0 run to put them at set and match point. It was the senior, Jells who finished her last home match with her 14th kill to send Cabrini into the quarterfinals.

Cabrini vaulted to a 9-2 lead at the start of the first set. Lakeshore used a service error on the other side to help get them back within three points as Sarah Tucker mostly featured for the Titans offense. However, the balanced Cabrini attack took over with five different players registering kills to help the Crescents coast in the first set.

“Watching Lakeshore, we knew that if we could keep them out of system, they wouldn’t be able to get the ball to the middle or Sarah Tucker,” said Dennies.

The Titans fell into an early hole in the early stages of the second set. The Crescents got to set point at 24-16, but a couple of miscues helped generate a Lakeshore rally. Laney Steibing’s serve accounted for two aces and cut the lead to 24-22, but a service error capped the set and put Cabrini on the brink of a sweep.

Lakeshore was led offensively by Sarah Tucker who had 10 kills. Claire Ecuyer added four kills. The Titans had four service aces.
