Prep Volleyball Report for Wednesday, Oct. 10

It was the first of two meetings between District 8-II rivals Belle Chasse and Academy of Our Lady and it was a good one.

In a battle for first place, the Cardinals made the trip to Marrero and came from behind to defeat the Penguins 15-25, 25-9, 25-13, 25-21 in a match that was delayed after officials were late showing up.

Once the officials made it, a good match ensued. AOL won the first set before Belle Chasse roared back to win the final three sets in solid fashion.

Nia St. Cyr led the way with 23 kills and seven blocks while Valerie Vujnovich had 14 kills and 10 blocks. Emily Clark dished out 46 assists and Bela Dekovic added 19 digs.

The Cardinals (18-12, 4-0) remained unbeaten and on top in district play with the win while Academy of Our Lady (16-8, 3-1). Belle Chasse has won 12 of its last 14 matches. The loss snapped a four-match win streak for the Penguins.

The two rivals will meet again on Oct. 25 at Belle Chasse to close the regular season.

In a battle of superpowers, four-time defending Division I state champion Mount Carmel (26-1) entertains four-time defending Division IV state champion Pope John Paul II (15-4) at 5:30 p.m. The Jaguars swept both meetings a year ago while the two champions split a pair of matches in both 2015 and 2016. The Cubs won the lone meeting in 2014.
