2022 Metro Prep Players of Week

The 84th Year of the Greater New Orleans Quarterback Club concluded Tuesday with the year-end awards luncheon at The Cannery in New Orleans.

The Player of the Year is Lutcher quarterback D’Wayne Winfield.

A senior and 3-year starter, Winfield had a fantastic season in leading the Bulldogs to the Non-Select Division II state championship with a 28-25 victory over North DeSoto this past Saturday.

The numbers for Winfield were off the charts.

He rushed 324 times for 2,477 yards and 38 touchdowns while completing 136 of 202 passes (67%) for 2,180 yards and 32 touchdowns with just four interceptions.

In all, Winfield accounted for 4,657 yards and 70 touchdowns.

In the state championship game against North DeSoto, Winfield rushed 43 times for 130 yards and a touchdown and completed 20 of 32 passes for 299 yards and three touchdowns.

The Coach of the Year is Frank Gendusa of St. Martin’s Episcopal.

In his 45th year coaching high school football, Gendusa led the Saints to an 11-2 record and into uncharted waters, taking St. Martin’s to the state semifinals for the first time in school history.

Along the way, the Saints averaged 35.8 points per game and defeated Delhi Charter and St. Mary’s in the Select Division IV playoffs before falling in the semifinals to Vermilion Catholic.

The Team of the Year is Destrehan.

The Wildcats capped a magical 14-0 season with a 17-10 victory over top seed Ruston in the Non-Select Division I state championship game after defeating a defending state champion in Westgate in the semifinals.

Along the way, Destrehan outscored its opponents 544-91. The closest anyone played the Wildcats in the regular season was to a 35-point loss.

In his third season, Marcus Scott coached his team to the fifth state championship in program history and Scott now has a tremendous record of 36-3 in his three seasons.

Along with the annual award winners, there were 15 Players of the Week from 15 different schools honored.

2022 GNO QB CLUB PREP PLAYERS OF WEEK

WEEK 1—ELIJAH DAVIS—RIVERSIDE ACADEMY

A senior, Davis had 31 carries for 304 yards and seven touchdowns and caught a pass for 25 yards in a 62-23 win over St. Thomas Aquinas. A commit to the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, Davis is coached by Lee Roussel.

WEEK 2—P.J. MARTIN—DE LA SALLE

A senior, Martin rushed 28 times for 293 yards and two touchdowns as De La Salle staged a furious second half rally to down Holy Cross 28-22. Martin is coached by Graham Jarrott.

WEEK 3—ARNOLD BARNES—BOOKER T. WASHINGTON

A senior and Tulane commit, Barnes rushed 22 times for 381 yards and five touchdowns and caught a 25-yard touchdown pass as Booker T. Washington outscored John Ehret 48-42. Barnes is coached by Wayne Reese Jr.

WEEK 4—JAEDON VOISIN—BELLE CHASSE

A junior, Voisin rushed 31 times for 327 yards and four touchdowns as the Cardinals downed Salmen 35-30 to remain unbeaten at 4-0. Voisin is coached by Stephen Meyers.

WEEK 5—ARCH MANNING—NEWMAN

A senior and Texas commit, Manning set three school records in a 52-22 win over Pearl River. Manning completed 18-of-29 passes for 357 yards and seven touchdowns in the win and moved ahead of uncle Peyton Manning for career touchdown passes, moved ahead of uncle Eli Manning for career passing yards and moved ahead of Jai Tyler in total touchdowns. Manning is coached by Nelson Stewart.

WEEK 6—D’WANYE WINFIELD—LUTCHER

A senior, Winfield completed 13-of-15 passes for 190 yards and two touchdowns and rushed 24 times for 237 yards and five touchdowns in a 42-7 win over South Terrebonne. In the process, Winfield went over 1,000 yards rushing and over 1,000 yards passing for the season through just six games. Winfield is coached by Dwain Jenkins.

WEEK 7—MARLON PROUT—JOHN CURTIS CHRISTIAN

A junior, Prout rushed 14 times for 137 yards and a touchdown as John Curtis went on the road and posted a very impressive 35-14 win at perennial power Acadiana. Prout is coached by J.T. Curtis.

WEEK 8—ROYAL FALGOUT—JOHN EHRET

A senior, Falgout rushed 17 times for 255 yards and three touchdowns and completed 9 of 15 passes for 109 yards and a fourth touchdown in a 33-28 win at Chalmette in a showdown for the District 8-5A lead. A two-time MVP in 8-5A, Falgout is coached by Reggie Rogers.

WEEK 9—ASHTON LEVI—BOGALUSA

A junior, Levi accounted for 605 yards and five touchdowns in a 56-15 win over Pine. Levi completed 19 of 28 passes for 544 yards and four touchdowns and two interceptions. Levi also rushed three times for five yards and a fifth touchdown and he caught pass for 56 yards. Levi is coached by Cyril Crutchfield.

WEEK 10—FRED ROBERTSON—WARREN EASTON

A junior, Robertson rushed 21 times for 320 yards and three touchdowns and caught a pass for five yards in a 59-38 victory over McDonogh 35 to win the District 11-4A championship. Robertson is coached by Jerry Phillips.

WEEK 11—DKHAI JOSEPH—EAST ST. JOHN

A junior, Joseph caught 11 passes for 233 yards and three touchdowns as the Wildcats held off Walker 29-28 in the opening round of the Non-Select Division I state playoffs. Joseph is coached by Brandon Brown.

WEEK 12—JAI EUGENE JR.—DESTREHAN

A senior and Tulane commit, Eugene completed 11 of 13 passes for 167 yards and two touchdowns and he rushed 11 times for 129 yards and three touchdowns as the Wildcats remained unbeaten with a 35-14 win over Dutchtown in the Non-Select Division I state regional round of the playoffs. Eugene is coached by Marcus Scott.

WEEK 13—HARLEM BERRY—ST. MARTIN’S EPISCOPAL

A sophomore, Berry rushed 29 times for 306 yards and four touchdowns and ran for a 2-point conversion as the Saints defeated St. Mary’s 29-25 to reach the Select Division IV semifinals. It is the first time St. Martin’s has ever been to the state semifinals. Berry is coached by Frank Gendusa.

WEEK 14—TOREY LAMBERT—BROTHER MARTIN

A senior, Lambert rushed 24 times for 283 yards and five touchdowns and caught two passes for 33 yards as the Crusaders downed Carencro 55-24 in the Select Division I state semifinals. It is the first time Brother Martin has reached a state championship game since 1989. Lambert it coached by Mark Bonis.

WEEK 15—AYDEN AUTHEMENT—ST. CHARLES CATHOLIC

A senior, Authement rushed 17 times for 57 yards and a touchdown and completed 13 of 18 passes for 182 yards and a touchdown as the Comets downed Dunham 32-28 for the Selection Division I state championship. Authement is coached by Wayne Stein.
