New Orleans (Saturday, March 25, 2023) – On paper it appeared as though speed was lacking, and it was Kingsbarns who took advantage, striking a commanding lead early in the 110th running of the $1 million Twispires.com Louisiana Derby (G2), drawing away by open lengths and dominating a field of 11 other 3-year-olds at Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots.

Whisper Hill Farm and Three Chimneys Farm’s Kingsbarns earned 100 points to secure a spot in the Kentucky Derby starting gates, putting him in third on the leaderboard.

Trained by Todd Pletcher, Kingsbarns now becomes the fourth colt from the barn who has likely earned enough points to contest the 149th running of the Kentucky Derby presented by Woodford Reserve, joining with Forte (90), Tapit Trice (50), and Major Dude (40).

“It appeared on paper that there was not a lot of pace, so we drew up a plan with Flavien (jockey Prat) that if we came away in good order to be placed forward and hopefully dictate the race on our terms,” Pletcher said.
