KENNER – The rain outside did not damper the enthusiasm for Southeastern athletics at Tuesday night’s Lion Athletic Association Coaches Caravan at Messina’s.

Head football coach Frank Scelfo has reason for optimism heading into his second year with the Lions, and it starts with senior quarterback Chasen Virgil, who passed for a Southland Conference-best 3,034 yards in 2018. Most of the Lions’ skill players from a year ago are also back.

Defensively, Isaac Ademeyi-Berglund led Southeastern in sacks (six) and tackles for loss (10) a season ago, and preseason All-Southland pick Xavier Lewis of East St. John heads the secondary.

Other preseason first-team all-league picks on Scelfo’s roster include wide receiver Juwan Petit-Frere (selected at both receiver and kick returner), tight end/H-back Bransen Schwebel and punt returner Devonte Williams.

The Lions begin practice next week, leading up to the Aug. 29 season opener at Strawberry Stadium against Jacksonville State.
