DESTREHAN – What a stunner the matchup provided last year when St. Charles Catholic took it to Destrehan, winning the game 24-8 in LaPlace at Comets Field.

No one was stunned this year.

The Wildcats took control early and never let back, beating the Comets, 31-3, on Friday night.

Destrehan quarterback J.R. Blood hooked up with wideout Quinton Torbor for a 51-yard touchdown in the second quarter to put the Wildcats up, 7-0. In the end, it was all the hosts would need.

Blood finished the game 8-of-15 with 126 yards, one touchdown and one interception plus five carries for 33 yards.

Blood did not attempt a pass after the first half but Destrehan still ran for 155 yards in the second half to wear down St. Charles.

University of Georgia commitment John Emery led the Wildcats with 18 carries on 159 yards and three rushing touchdowns.

In the first half, the Comets held Emery in check, allowing him 59 yards on 12 carries with a 9-yard touchdown run midway through the second quarter. H wouldn’t be contained for much longer, as he exploded in the third quarter with touchdown runs of 56 and 24 yards, respectively.

On the 56-yard score, Emery spun off one tackler at the line, ran backwards for a moment before reversing field and bursting down the sideline for the score.

“Last year they kind of bottled him up. But, John made a lot of things on his own tonight. A lot of plays he made was bouncing it outside and doing some things and just being an SEC running back. That’s what they do and he was just phenomenal tonight.”, said Destrehan head coach Stephen Robicheaux.

Wildcats running back Kyle Edwards contributed 11 carries for 66 yards. On the night, Destrehan totaled 254 rushing yards as a team.

Destrehan was stout on the other side of the ball, especially defensive tackle Jeremiah Murphy, who caused havoc up front. Murphy notched a sack and a pass deflection.

St. Charles had their only score came in the third quarter set up by a muffed punt recovered by Jacob Ganote. Destrehan held the Comets to a 36-yard field goal by Cameron Fabre.

The Comets finished with just 135 total yards on the night. Quarterback Justin Dumas completed 5/14 for 43 yards and one interception. They were only able to manage 92 rushing yards in total. Joe Chiarella led the team with 13 carries for 44 yards.

Destrehan safety Bryce Authement had an interception, and linebacker Mandel Eugene also recovered a fumble for the Comets.

“I think we got a chance to be pretty good. But on the flip side, we’re still making mistakes and we’re still doing things that we have to clean up,” Robicheaux said. “But I love this team because of the fact that they’re all business-like, all the time. They come out and work. They’re not a whole lot of hype. They just come out here and get work done. It’s a good team. They’re fun to coach. They come out to work every day. Good leadership, and just a fun team to coach.”

John Ehret, 26-0 winners this week over Hahnville, awaits Destrehan (2-0) at Hoss Memtsas Stadium next Friday.
