Two veteran pitchers plan to return to LSU for the 2022 season.

Senior pitchers Devin Fontenot and Ma’Khail Hilliard announced after the second day of the 2021 Major League Baseball draft Monday that they will return to LSU for another season.

After both were not selected in the first 10 rounds of the draft, the right-handed pitchers took the option to come back under new head coach Jay Johnson as he tries to build a pitching staff for his first season at the helm.

A preseason All-American before this past season, Fontenot went 4-2 with a 2.86 ERA in 34.2 innings as the Tigers’ bullpen stopper. The Woodlands, Texas may end up as a starting pitcher in 2022.

Hilliard ended up back on the starting weekend rotation for LSU last year after the injury to top starter Jaden Hill, who was drafted Monday along with fellow weekend starter Landon Marceaux. Hilliard, a Central High product, finished 6-0 with a 4.31 ERA in 37.1 innings.

Fontenot and Hilliard will return to LSU for a fifth season through the NCAA’s eligibility extension given to spring-sport athletes due to the pandemic.
