Veal takes final SLC Player of the Week honor for 2017-18

FRISCO, Texas – Southeastern Louisiana junior guard Marlain Veal was among those holding up the Southland Conference regular season trophy after the Lions defeated Nicholls 69-57 on Saturday.

Veal was honored Sunday for helping Southeastern accomplish that goal by being named the final Southland Conference Player of the Week for the 2017-18 season.

Veal averaged 13.5 points, 7.0 assists and 5.0 rebounds in an undefeated week to help the Lions clinch a share of the title and the top seed in the conference tournament. Southeastern received a bye in the semifinals and will play an opponent to be determined Friday at 5 p.m. in the Merrell Center in Katy, Texas.

Veal began the week with 13 points, six assists, four rebounds and a steal in Wednesday’s 68-64 win at New Orleans. He followed that with a 14-point, eight-assist, six-rebound outing in Saturday’s game against Nicholls. Veal, a native of New Orleans became the Lions’
single-season assist leader with 190 assists.

It is the second Southland Player of the Week honor for Veal during the 2017-18 season. He also received the award for the third week of the season on Nov. 27 and for the second week of the 2016-17 season.

Veal is averaging 12.6 points and 5.3 rebounds with 64 steals this season. He is currently second on the Lions’ career list with 432 assists, one behind Leo McClure (1973-77). He is also second in single-season steals and third in career steals.

Southland Conference Tournament Ticket Information

The Southeastern Louisiana Athletics Ticket Office encourages all Lion and Lady Lion fans to purchase tickets for the Southland Conference Basketball Tournament on March 7-11 at the Merrell Center in Katy, Texas through the SLU Ticket Office.

Southeastern is selling all-tournament books that includes tickets for all eight sessions of the tournament for $70. Single-session tickets are on sale for $20. Tickets can be picked up at the Southeastern Athletics Ticket Office, which is open Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. and Friday from 8 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. The ticket office number is (985) 549-5466.
