Upsets are few and far between in the opening round of the LHSAA prep football playoffs, particularly in the new world we find ourselves in with the saturation of nine classes of playoff competition.

It is always a shock when a low seed knocks off a very high seed.

That was the case last Friday night when Belle Chasse shocked fifth-seed Plaquemine 21-19 on the road in the opening round of the Class 4A state playoffs.

The performance was one that Belle Chasse head coach Stephen Meyers had bee waiting for.

“The first half was the best football we have played this season,” Meyers said. “It proved what we are capable of doing if we can execute and sustain it. That certainly gave the kids confidence that they can compete with excellent teams. We need to carry that over against Woodlawn.”

Sophomore quarterback Jordan Mariana ran for two scores and passed for one in the victory a week ago. Colin Montgomery caught a 41-yard touchdown pass. Cameron Vidtor is a solid runner, along with Holden Dejean.

“We have stuck with our ball control running game and focused on playing sound, solid defense,” Meyers said. “That has been the formula and has to be the formula for us to be successful. We understand who we are.”

The challenge this week is a Woodlawn team that can score.

The Knights (8-3) have scored 40 or more points eight times this season, including scoring over 60 points twice. They rocked 12th-seed Westgate 61-20 in the opening round of the playoffs. Trivenskey Mosley is an outstanding runner while Jordan Hester is a superb receiver for quarterback Kentrez Roby.

“They are a very talented team with a lot of weapons,” Meyers said. “We know we will have our hands full but it is very exciting that they are coming to Belle Chasse. To have a home playoff game in the second round is a great thing for our community. Our kids will be excited and our fans will be excited. I hope we have another one of those upset efforts in us.”

The Cardinals (7-4) last won a playoff game in 2013, prior to the win at Plaquemine.

“We know where we are and we know there is history here with a state championship and two other state championship game appearances,” Meyers said. “We would love to be able to make more history.”
