UNO’s Omoghibo, UCA’s Doss named SLC Volleyball Players of the Week

Omoghibo claims 47 kills for New Orleans offense, Doss delivers consecutive 31-dig matches for Central Arkansas defense

FRISCO, Texas – New Orleans’ Ehize Omoghibo and Central Arkansas’ Emily Doss are the Southland Conference Volleyball Players of the Week, the league announced Monday. All weekly awards are presented by MidSouth Bank.

Omoghibo claims her first weekly honor after posting a .619 hitting percentage for UNO (7-7) over the weekend at the College of Charleston Invitational. The Privateers will now look ahead to their conference home opener Tuesday night against Lamar, with first serve slated for 6:30 p.m. CT.

Doss nabs her first award of the season with 79 digs for the Sugar Bears (6-7) this past weekend at the Cougar Classic, hosted by SIU-Edwardsville. The junior bolstered a UCA defense that limited opponents to a .202 hitting percentage for the tournament. Central Arkansas will now gear up for its conference opener at home against Houston Baptist Thursday at 6 p.m.

Offensive Player of the Week: Ehize Omoghibo – Sr. – Opposite – Evanston, Ill.

Omoghibo was named to the All-Tournament team at the College of Charleston Invitational, following a phenomenal weekend that included 47 kills over three matches. The junior began the three-game stretch with a .619 hitting percentage against Jacksonville State Friday afternoon. Omoghibo then closed out the weekend by smashing her previous match-high kills (14) with an astounding 21 kills in a five-set win over College of Charleston Saturday afternoon.

Honorable Mention: Morgan Dewyer, Houston Baptist; Alexis Warren, Northwestern State; Caroline Golden, Southeastern Louisiana; Xariah Williams, Stephen F. Austin.

Defensive Player of the Week: Emily Doss – Jr. – Libero – Springdale, Ark.

Doss took home her third All-Tournament honor of the season after delivering back-to-back 31-dig performances to close out the weekend for the Sugar Bears at the Cougar Classic. In addition to averaging 5.6 digs per set, the junior also provided seven assists, two service aces and a kill for the Sugar Bears. Doss has now accrued 256 digs on the year, averaging 4.57 per set.

Southland weekly award winners are nominated and voted upon by each school’s sports information director. Voting for one’s own athlete is not permitted. To earn honorable mention, a student-athlete must appear on 25 percent of ballots.
