NEW ORLEANS – You can add two more honors to Privateer Track and Field after a successful Sunday at the Birmingham Crossplex. The Southland office named junior sprinter Ismael Kone and sophomore distance runner Alexandra Weir as Southland Track and Field Athletes of the Week following their victories at the USA Invitational.

It’s the second time in his career that Kone has been named Southland Track and Field Athlete of the week, and the first time that Weir has been named Southland Track and Field Athlete of the week.

Ismael Kone

Kone won both the 60 and the 200 on Sunday. In the 60 he set a new school record and personal best with a time of 6.66. Kone’s time in the 60 currently ranks as the 24th best time in the country, and best time in the 60 by a Southland sprinter this so far this season. His winning time in the 200 was 21:31 – the second-best time by a Southland sprinter in the 200 so far this season.

Alexandra Weir

Weir earned the honor after winning the women’s mile at the USA Invitational with a time of 4:56.37. So far this season Weir owns two of the top three women’s mile times in the Southland. Her top time of 4:53.97 earned her third-place at the Aggie Invitational at the end of January. It’s her first first-place finish since winning the 1,500 at the USF Bulls Invite as a member of South Florida in March of 2021.
