UNO’s Iza, McNeese’s Maxwell named finalists for ABCA Gold Glove Awards

Privateers’ second-baseman, McNeese’s hot-corner player honored for fielding success

GREENSBORO, N.C. – New Orleans second baseman Salo Iza and McNeese third baseman Carson Maxwell are finalists for the 2019 ABCA/Rawlings Gold Glove Team, the association announced Monday. The Gold Glove Award winners will be announced on Wednesday, June 19.

Iza helped turn 39 double-plays, the fourth-most among Southland Conference fielders. He ranked seventh in the league in assists (147) and committed just four errors in 265 total chances.

Against Southland opponents, he finished fourth in the conference in double-plays (20) and fifth in assists (81) with just one error in 135 chances. From March 22-May 10, Iza was errorless in 130 chances with 80 assists and 18 double-plays.

A member of the 2019 Southland Conference All-Defensive Team, Maxwell tallied 129 assists with just four errors and 12 double-plays in 199 chances from the hot corner, helping lead the Cowboys to their first Southland Conference Tournament title and NCAA Tournament appearance since 2003.

In league play, he was flawless at third base, finishing as one of eight Southland defenders to post a perfect fielding percentage on at least 100 total chances. Maxwell recorded 66 assists and helped on four twin-killings.
