HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Eight pitchers combined to keep the Southern Miss Golden Eagles lineup mostly quiet as the New Orleans Privateers (6-1) took a 2-1 decision in its first road game of the season at Pete Taylor Park on Tuesday night.

Reeves Martin nailed the door shut for his third save of the season and the 15th of his career. Martin allowed a one-out single but that was all in the frame. He struck out Fred Franklin, Hunter Leblanc, and Hunter Slater to cap off the sixth consecutive victory for New Orleans.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Privateers answered a second inning Southern Miss run with two of their own in the third to chase starter, Jarod Wright. New Orleans strung together four consecutive hits, the last a line drive double by Luther Woullard that drove in a run to put the Privateers ahead 2-1.

From there, Privateer pitchers were able to keep the Golden Eagle lineup off balance. Bailey Holstein and Jonathan Allen worked scoreless innings after New Orleans gained the lead. Zach Thompson followed in the sixth by striking out three batters and allowing just one base runner on a walk.

Cortlynn Ramirez became the third true freshman to appear on the hill for New Orleans and retired the first two batters faced. But after a single and a walk, Southern Miss had the heart of the order waiting in the wings. John Barr came on and quickly erased the threat by coming back from down 2-0 in the count to strike out Hunter Slater.

Raburn, Woullard, and Bratton each had two hits for New Orleans. Privateer pitchers limited Southern Miss to six total hits for the night. Matt Wallner led the Golden Eagle offense with two doubles. He also scored the lone run.

WIN-LOSS RECORD
Brandon Mitchell (1-0) earned the victory with two innings out of the bullpen. The southpaw struck out one and allowed the run (unearned). Wright fell to 0-1 for the Golden Eagles with UNO scoring both runs off the right-hander in 2.1 innings of work. Martin has now seen action in five games this year and has six punchouts over 4.2 innings.

NEXT UP
New Orleans will open a three-game series against Yale on Friday, Mar. 1. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Maestri Field.
