UNO downs Tulane, 15-10, to retain Pelican Cup

NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers baseball team (18-19) jumped out to a large early lead and withstood a middle inning threat to secure the Pelican Cup with a 15-10 win over the Tulane Green Wave (25-12) on Tuesday at Maestri Field.

The win for the Privateers was their fifth straight victory at home over Tulane which spans the last four years.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Privateers put up eight runs in the first as Tulane walked six batters in the opening frame. Three of those came with the bases loaded. New Orleans got just two hits, both from Collin Morrill. The second was a grand slam off Landon Boeneke to give the Privateers an 8-0 lead after one frame.

Tulane started their climb back in the next inning with two solo homers. Grant Mathews parked the first and Sal Gozzo followed two batters later. The Privateers responded in the bottom of the frame with an RBI single from Beau Bratton.

The Green Wave made their big push in the fifth with a seven spot on six hits. Tulane then benefitted from two Privateer errors to bring the tying run in to square up the game at 9-9.

New Orleans surged back in front in the bottom of the frame as they took the lead for good with four runs on just one hit. Two walks and a hit batter loaded the bases ahead of Luther Woullard who lined a three-run double into right.

The Privateers added two more in the sixth. The first came on a solo home run by Tresten Kennard, his third of the year.

Reeves Martin came in with the tying run on deck and two outs in the eighth. He struck out Jonathon Artigues to end the Tulane threat and came back in the ninth to retire the
side in order. Martin struck out Kody Hoese looking to finish the game and collect his tenth save of the year.

WIN-LOSS

The win went to Mathew Oset (4-1). The loss for Tulane was taken by Ryan Green (0-1).

Morrill was one of four Privateers with two or more RBI and he also scored three runs. Kennard walked twice, drove in two runs, and scored twice. Bratton also scored twice and drove in a pair of runs. Tulane went through 11 pitchers on the night and issued 12 walks. New Orleans went to 6-0 in Tuesday games.
