Unbeatens Northshore, Ponchatoula highlights Thursday high school football schedule
Believe it or not, the halfway mark of the regular season begins tonight in high school football around Louisiana.
That includes several area teams in action.
The biggest game pits unbeatens Northshore (3-0, 1-0) and Ponchatoula (2-0, 1-0) at Pearl River in District 6-5A.
The Panthers are one of the big surprises thus far, with three good wins over Salmen (41-34), Lakeshore (31-10) and Mandeville (20-8) while the Green Wave have perhaps their best team ever under veteran coach Hank Tierney. Ponchatoula has wins over St. Helena (37-6) and a district win over Covington (27-3).
“Northshore is playing well, they are very good with a lot of skill players and they played good defense in the second half against Mandeville,” Tierney said. “We did not play well in the first half last week but got it going in the second half. We have to run it well to throw it and we did that in the second half. We have good team speed and skill players. We have to start better and far too many penalties.”
First-year Northshore coach Bobby Sanders is thrilled to be unbeaten but knows what his team is up against.
“I’m happy with the way the season has gone so far,” Sanders said. “We’ve answered some questions. We showed the ability to come from behind against Salmen. We played a complete game against Lakeshore. Against Mandeville, our defense and special teams picked us up. I thought Ponchatoula was really good last year and they are all back. They have no weaknesses and are very well coached.”
Also in District 6-5A, Fontainebleau (0-2, 0-1) plays at Covington (2-2, 0-1) at 7 p.m.
Perennial power Amite (2-0) looks to remain unbeaten on the road at Lakeshore (2-1) at 7 p.m.
A pair of schools in search of their first win collide at Hoss Memtsas Stadium at 6:30 p.m. when Country Day (0-2) faces Thomas Jefferson (0-2).
Douglass (0-1) travels to unbeaten Live Oak (3-0) at 7 p.m.
Fisher (0-1) heads to Metairie to take on Kenner Discovery (1-0) at Joe Yenni Stadium at 6:30 p.m.
Haynes Academy (2-0) looks to remain unbeaten on the road at Jewel Sumner (1-1) at 7 p.m.
In an intriguing matchup, a new program in M.L. King Charter (2-0), which has shown well thus far, faces a tall task against Warren Easton (1-1) at 7:30 p.m. at Pan American Stadium.
Northlake Christian (0-3) makes the trip to Independence (1-1) while Riverside Academy (0-2) looks for its first win at Albany (1-2), both at 7 p.m.
Rosenwald Collegiate tries to play for the first time at Capitol (2-1).
Salmen (2-1) travels to Loranger (0-2).
