EUNICE, La. – LSU Eunice baseball used a four-run fifth inning to overcome an early deficit and take down Monroe College 6-2 on Sunday at Bengal Stadium. LSUE (12-0) secured its seventh straight three-game series sweep, dating back to last season.

LSUE found itself in a 2-0 hole after Monroe manufactured both runs in the third inning. After the Bengals only managed two through their first four at bats, LSUE would use three hits and an error in the fifth inning to take the lead for good.

Following Peyton LeJeune’s sacrifice fly, Jack Merrifield gave the Bengals the lead with a bases loaded two-run single. Scott Jones would add to the tally in the next at bat with a sacrifice groundball.

Merrifield and LeJeune joined Ayden Makarus with muilt-hit games in the Bengals’ 10-hit attack.

Makarus provided a backbreaking solo home run in the eighth inning to help LSUE grab a four-run lead, 6-2. The Canadian’s first collegiate home run capped off a breakthrough game for the catcher with a three-hit performance.

Jacob Hammond grabbed his second win of the season in relief, throwing five shutout innings. Hammond scattered just two hits while striking out nine batters. Noah Beason picked up his second save of the campaign with a one-hit ninth inning.

Chance Stone made his first start at LSU Eunice, throwing for three innings.

LSU Eunice will head to Centenary College on Monday for a 4:00PM game against the Gents. The Bengals return home next weekend to host Kellogg CC for a four-game series.
