FORT WORTH, Texas – ULM never let go of an early lead in game one, while No. 6 TCU used a four-run sixth inning to go on top for good in game two as the Warhawks split Saturday’s doubleheader with the Horned Frogs, winning 13-9 in game one before dropping the nightcap, 6-4.

The game one win gave the Warhawks (24-23 overall) a series win over the Frogs (35-14), 2-1, after ULM won Friday’s game, 4-3. It marks ULM’s first series win over a ranked opponent since taking two of three from No. 25 Florida Atlantic on April 5-7, 2013 in Monroe.

Game 1: ULM 13, TCU 9

A fast start and a mid-game answer pushed ULM to a 13-9 series-clinching win. The Warhawks scored three runs in the first inning off a 2-RBI single from Grant Schulz and an RBI single from Michael Cervantes to claim a 3-0 advantage. TCU answered with two runs in the bottom of the first, but ULM responded with a four-run second inning, spearheaded by a 2-RBI triple by Mason Holt, an RBI single by Landon Cato and an RBI groundout by Cervantes for the 7-2 lead.

Holt collected a 2-RBI double in the third inning to extend the lead to 9-2.

TCU started a rally, scoring two runs in the fourth inning and four more in the fifth to get within a run, 9-8.

The Warhawks pulled back away in the sixth inning. Ryan Humeniuk and Cato hit back-to-back singles to open the inning. After a sacrifice bunt by Schulz, Andrew Beesley hit a pinch-hit 2-RBI double to right center to push the lead to 11-8. Two batters later, Logan Wurm connected on his second home run in as many days, a 2-run shot to left, to bring the lead back to 13-8.

TCU added a run in the bottom of the sixth, but Lucas Wepf and Reid Goleman combined to shut down the Frogs over the final three innings for the 13-9 victory.

Wepf (1-0) earned his first collegiate victory, throwing 2 1/3 innings, allowing one run on one hit with four walks and two strikeouts.

Humeniuk had three hits to lead ULM, while Holt drove in four runs. Schulz, Cervantes and Beesley had two RBIs each.

Game 2: TCU 6, ULM 4

The Warhawks opened with the lead again in game two. Schulz and Britt McKay each hit an RBI single with two outs in the first inning for the 2-0 lead.

Tyler Lien pitched five quality innings in his start, allowing two runs, one earned, on two hits with two walks and a career-high seven strikeouts. Both runs scored in the fifth inning, as Austin Henry scored on a throwing error and Rhett Maynor hit a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 2.

The Frogs took their first lead of the series in the sixth, plating four runs. Brayden Taylor hit an RBI single to put TCU on top. Zach Humphreys scored on a balk to double the lead. Austin Henry and Luke Boyers picked up RBIs to stretch the lead to 6-4.

ULM struck back with a run in the top of the eighth as Humeniuk’s RBI double scored Holt. The Warhawks loaded the bases, but TCU closer Haylen Green came in to retire Ryan Cupit to end the inning without any further damage done.

In the ninth inning, Humeniuk hit an RBI infield single with two outs to make it 6-4. However, Green got Landon Cato to strike out to end the game.

Cole Cressend (0-2) suffered the loss, allowing three runs on one hit with two walks while not retiring a batter.

Humeniuk, Schulz and McKay had two hits each for ULM.

ULM closes the regular season with a three-game series at Arkansas State on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Links to live video, audio and stats are available at ULMWarhawks.com.
