HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana football team will kick off the Frank Scelfo Era a little earlier than anticipated, as ULM officials announced Thursday that the 2018 season opener versus the Lions has been moved up to Aug. 30.

Originally scheduled for the opening Saturday of the season on Sept. 1, the ULM-SLU matchup has been moved to the preceding Thursday with a 7 p.m. kickoff from Malone Stadium in Monroe.

2018 will mark the seventh time since the program returned in 2003 that SLU has opened the season on a Thursday. The Lions have previously opened on Thursdays in 2004 (W, vs. Arkansas-Monticello, 46-32), 2006 (L, at New Mexico State, 30-15), 2007 (L, at New Mexico State, 35-14), 2010 (L, at Tulane, 27-21), 2013 (W, vs. Southeast Missouri, 45-7) and 2015 (W, at Northwestern State, 34-20).

The meeting between Southeastern and the host Warhawks will be the 48th in an in-state rivalry that dates back to 1935. The two teams last met on Sept. 25, 2010 with ULM edging the Lions, 21-20, in Monroe.

In addition to serving as his in-game debut in the green and gold, the Aug. 30 will be Scelfo’s return to his alma mater. Scelfo was a standout on the baseball diamond for then-Northeast Louisiana from 1978-81 and was the school’s Athlete of the Year as a senior. He earned his bachelor’s degree in 1981 in Monroe, before completing his graduate studies in 1983.

The opener at ULM will mark the first of two games versus in-state Football Bowl Subdivision competition to open the 2018 campaign for the Lions, who are looking for their fifth winning season in the past six years. SLU’s second non-conference game will be a Sept. 8 trip to LSU.

The Lions will open their home schedule versus defending Southland Conference champion Central Arkansas on Sept. 15. Other visitors to Hammond include conference rivals Northwestern State (Sept. 29), Houston Baptist (Oct. 13), Abilene Christian (Oct. 20) and McNeese (Nov. 3). The Lions will travel to face league foes Lamar (Sept. 22), Incarnate Word (Oct. 6), Sam Houston State (Oct. 27) and Nicholls (Nov. 15).
