LAFAYETTE, La. – UL Lafayette used a 10-0 run to close the third quarter to change the momentum on the way to a 60-50 victory over Southeastern Louisiana in nonconference women’s basketball action Sunday evening in the Cajundome.

Southeastern (0-3) led for the majority of the opening half and into the third period, but UL Lafayette (3-1) took its first lead during the game-changing run and never looked back. The lead would grow to as many as 11 in the final quarter and Southeastern’s final charge fell short.

The primary difference in the game was the hosts ability to get to the charity stripe. The Ragin’ Cajuns finished 25-for-36 from the free throw line, while Southeastern was just 2-for-5 from the line.

Jyar Francis led SLU off the bench with 15 points and was the lone Lady Lion in double figures. Caitlyn Williams added nine points, while Alexius Horne and Morgan Carrier chipped in to a balanced Lady Lion effort with eight points each.

Williams, making her first start of the season, was the Lady Lions’ most productive performer on the boards, finishing with eight rebounds. Horne led all players with five assists. SLU held UL Lafayette to 31.9 percent (15-for-47) shooting from the floor

The Ragin’ Cajun effort was paced by Brandi Williams, who finished with 25 points and nine rebounds. Skyler Goodwin chipped in with nine points for the Ragin’ Cajuns.

After limiting UL Lafayette to five made field goals in the first 20 minutes, Southeastern held a 20-19 lead at the break. A layup by Horne gave SLU a 32-26 lead midway through the third quarter.

The Ragin’ Cajuns cut the lead to two, but a Francis bucket put the Lady Lions back up, 34-30, with 4:12 left in the third quarter. However, UL Lafayette flipped the momentum by holding Southeastern scoreless for the next six minutes.

Andrea Cournoyer closed the 13-0 run with a three that put UL Lafayette ahead, 43-34, with 8:35 remaining. Southeastern would battle back to get as close as six, but could never get fully over the hump down the stretch.
